We stayed in Murat last night, not far from where the tour finished the day before, and between two points on the route for today.
It was a nice night last night, and the plan was for the boys to get up this morning, do some of the Cat 2 and 3 climbs of the tour route today, and then we'd head off towards Toulouse. No worries. Until at some point during the night when it started pouring down.
I was woken to a loud snapping noise, and then a big splash. Jumping out of the van into the pouring rain I realise the noise was the awning leg snapping off, and the water that had pooled in the sail splashing onto the ground. Really, really not a good start to the day.
So we get the van ready to leave, all of us in various states of cranky, and head off. We drove about 5kms before finding our first road block – they blocked the tour route off at 11am. A quick conversation with the man in French, and he has assured us that there is no way out to Toulouse – we've ended up in the one town that will be completely blocked off until 5pm as is sits in the point where the two ends of a loop join up. Awesome. We have 350kms to drive and no way to get out. Luckily, there are worse places to get stranded than somewhere with electricity and toilets and the Tour going past just up the road. I guess we were just meant to see some of Stage 9. Graham also caught a bidon tossed out by the peleton – by Garmin of all teams, his favourite!
