Spanish – holy sh*te.

Wow. Just....wow. I've never heard people talk so fast. Even when people have been speaking English to me, it's an effort just to keep up. When things are written down it's not too bad being able to work out what they say, they're usually pretty close to the French or English words.

Everyday is a new game of charades. Yesterday there were two....one to establish that the power at our site had stopped working and I wanted to test the other plug, and the second in the supermarket to establish that the sausages we were buying for dinner had something that flapped its wings in them... The day before that we were trying to get directions to the bus we had to get into town from the campsite...I smiled and nodded as the girl explained it at a pace that defied the laws of physics, and I left, telling Ross that it was unlikely we were ever finding the campsite again. Luckily for us (in an unlucky way), we screwed up the bus timings on the way back and ended up getting a cab back to the campsite. Probably the only reason our journey has continued!

I pay with the biggest note I have on all occasions, unless I know the price of what I'm buying. I say 'Si, si' repeatedly and smile in the hope that that is the correct answer to the question.

I'm desperately trying to learn some of the Spanish words we use most often so I don't end up in too much of a pickle. So far I can say that I have a caravana, I would like to stay one night, there are two adults, no children and electricity, please. I'm very talented, and most often, misunderstood the first three times.

More than once I've resorted to French, and in some cases, that has been more successful than English. But it's fun not knowing what you're buying in the supermarket, or ordering for dinner, or saying yes to. This is, after all, one of the most fun things about travelling!

  1. I think she was trying to tell you that the day you can determine what kind of meat is in sausages, pigs will fly! I hope you are both well and having a good time. Thanks for the blog posts, they are very entertaining, please keep them coming. I trust the girls are keeping you up to date on events over here, let me know if you want any goss ;-)
