Yellow safety jackets and an orange safety triangle

So all three of us are fine, Monique just had a slight issue with the rear passenger tyre...and then consequently the steering. A campervan veering all over the road with an unresponsive steering wheel – not something I'm keen to do again.

We were about 30kms from Valencia after a massive drive (we did about 400km in the heat today) and all of a sudden I couldn't keep it straight and turning the wheel just made it worse. Thankfully we were near an exit (and not on the 200km of straight, one lane road, we had been) so we were able to pull into the turning lane.

Safety jackets at the ready (and still in their packets) in the drivers door, we got together all the necessary bits and pieces together and set to work, trying not to think about the semi-trailers racing along behind us in the next lane.

A bit of confusion with the jack (it deliberately jacks the van up at an angle, not something that seemed right at the time) and some very dirty hands and clothes, and we were done. Thank goodness for driver education days (something my Dad made me do on my Laser before I was allowed to sit for my Ps), and the thousand and one tyre/wheel changes I've witnessed!

Luckily the spare was good (the bolt that released the locking mechanism for the spare's housing was rusted shut – a good sign), and we've already seen two tyre places in Valencia to try and fumble our way into getting it fixed. I can't wait for that game of charades.
